23rd April 2004

Grußwort der Bundesministerin

The 1st May 2004 is a historic date. Ten countries are joining the European Union, Austria lies once at the heart of Central Europe.

For years Austria has been strengthening the excellent relations with the neighbouring countries and has been building bridges in the area of education. Now we can build on these excellent relations and arrange the encounter of young people from many different countries on these very bridges. As a start on 23rd April 2004 at Schloss Kittsee we will celebrate the accession of those for whom this Accession is particularly far reaching and relevant: children and adolescents from Austria and from our neighbouring countries and the new EU member states of Poland, the Slovak Republic, Slovenia, the Czech Republic, and Hungary.

The EU of 25 is a major opportunity for the young. This is why today again it is the children and the adolescents who present the cultural particularities of their countries and underline the partnerships that have already been established between our countries. We have the pleasure of celebrating today with young and promising people from the new member states, even before the actual Enlargement date, at Schloss Kittsee, whose geographic location makes it an ideal venue for encounters between neighbours, the fact that we are all moving together and that we can all make a contribution to this growing spirit of togetherness.
