Status-quo report from the four working groups

The summery of the various reports below describes the state of affairs before res. until the meeting in Vienna.

until Stadtschlaining (2003):

  • the first year was dedicated to the investigation of cultural identity in the regions; focus at the past (folklore, work above and with regional artists; dead one as well as alive). Some focussed the youngest history as important for the arrangement of the cultural identity, the other ones focused former centuries. Also geographic specialities of the various regions had been dealt with (e.g. cartographic activities).
  • there was one group-meeting in Bratislava
  • 31st March—3rd April 2003: group-meeting in Skoczów
  • Each school should develop a questionnaire on the own region, which is sent to the other schools and answered by the «other» pupils.
  • Pupils from all five involved countries create together a calendar for the year 2004 («Europe-calendar»).
  • In the second school-year a presentation is planned—as broad as possible—mainly with means of the project-websites: online-communication in German and English shall be supported (chats, discussion-groups).
  • Sometimes schools report from their connections to the regional press (print, radio, TV).

between Stadtschlaining and Vienna:

  • Handing in of project-report (for Socrates) in September 2003.
  • finalisation and production of the «Europe-calendar».
  • 6th until 9th October 2003: group-meeting in Ostrava (summarizations; presentation of calendar).
  • press-contacts (print, radio, TV) is continued (as communicated in all 5 countries).
  • exchange of pupils between Poland and Hungary (1 week in Summer).
  • enforced work with electronic media (internet-discussion-forums in foreign languages).
  • with the school-year 03/04 start of pupils work to literature and music.
  • in Poland and Hungary: in November organisation of the «Comenius week».

planned activities after the meeting in Vienna:

  • preparations for the group-meeting in Carinthia (ca. end May / early in June)
  • a common book (as concrete result) is planned—including literary contributions of pupils («my own way to Europe»); the book will be divided in two parts: past versus future
  • in April 2004 Polish students will visit Hungary
  • to switch from the treatment of the cultural past to the present, res. to visions for the future (presentation of the achieved contents in creative form).

until Stadtschlaining (2003):

  • the first meeting (Oct. 2002) was in Warsaw: Pupils developed a questionnaire to various issues related to «lifestyle» of teenagers: learning, music, sport, pocket money, leisure time, school-extern responsibilities, consume of alcohol, cigarettes, drugs (about 100—200 questionnaires had been completed per country).
  • the results were treated and analysed statistically and had also been discussed national in school lessons.
  • sometimes these activities had been reported by local media (Kosice).
  • at the second meeting (March 2003) in Schwechat the results of the various countries of the questionnaires had been presented and discussed (learning targets: ability to communicate, language skills, methods of presentation)
  • a core of pupils acting as multiplier in their school
  • various material had been produced: video, photo-documentation, essays, poems, exhibition projects, CD-Rom

between Stadtschlaining and Vienna:

  • two further group-intern meetings are planned
  • the installation of a website was decided (comment: is still not existing)
  • future focal points: economic background of the various life styles, comparison of the presentation of the involved countries in schoolbooks, discussion of prejudices and clichés.
  • the idea for a ABC-meeting due to the EU-enlargement was initiated by this working-group, also the proposal to install a own ABC-website.
  • November 2003, meeting in Kosice (school jubilee): focus of topics was an economic one, the research for the reason of different survey-results, different infrastructural equipment of the youth, situation of income / consumer behaviour.

planned activities after the meeting in Vienna:

  • the results of the survey shall be summed up and brought to a «presentable» form
  • future thematic focal points: prejudice—outside perception—own perception—and research of schoolbooks content in this context.
  • pupils work / documentation of the second project-year shall be finished by end of May 2004.
  • next meeting: May 2004 in Schwechat.

until Stadtschlaining (2003):

  • all involved schools are situated in periphery zones, seen from socio-economic as from touristy sight, what constitutes the interest to find common or also diverging issues.
  • meeting in Orlova (Nov. 2002): was intended to get in contact to each other, to fix steps of procedure, presentation of the different regions; investigation of the touristy potential on site.
  • development of a questionnaire concerning the touristy analyses of strengths and weaknesses of the different regions.
  • meeting in Freistatdt (January 2003): investigation of the touristy potential on site; decision for a film-project (title: «own perception—outside perception»).
  • the work on a common homepage was fixed as a project target (the website is existing nowadays, but is still «work in progress», refer to www.prosocrates.org); content is made out of the discussion with the own area and the acquirement of knowledge of «the others» (translation of the websites is done by the pupils themselves).
  • test-enterprises as «travel-centres» are planned.

between Stadtschlaining and Vienna:

  • Nov. 2003: at the meeting in Neratovice the foundation of test-enterprises (travel agencies) was discussed
  • in some cases the intended test-travel agencies are already realised
  • Work at the homepage: extension, pupils concentrate on the places, make available pictures and text, translation work
  • some sort of «Xenophobes Guide» was started: pupils collect their experiences, the guide shall be published in form of a small booklet
  • in March 2004 a Meeting in Slovenia is planned (in Celje)

planned activities after the meeting in Vienna:

  • 2005 there will be a fair of test-enterprises in Freistadt, which will also be the location of presentation of all results

until Stadtschlaining:

  • basic contents of the group: 1) to inform about society of the generation of grand-parents, to raise awareness for this (= historic part); 2) nature-oriented agriculture (= ecologic part)
  • Nov. 2002: Meeting in Krakow to agree upon the topic for a three-years project
  • Meeting in Kezmarok: pupils work on the events of 1956 res. 1968 («oral history», interview of grandparents, relatives).
  • meeting in Poland (Hungary, Slovak Republic, Netherlands) with the focus of work on «Second World War and Holocaust», setting up of a message of peace for Europe.
  • Visit of Polish pupils in Hungary: content of work was the history of both nations from the 10th century until today …
  • Hungary: topic «biologic food» and «traditional handicraft» including a visit in a village, where natural, «traditional» agriculture is still carried out. And debating about the E-numbers.
  • implementation of a common website for the project (operated by the Hungarian School): http://topics.hatvani.hu.

between Stadtschlaining and Wien:

  • in this group financial difficulties arose—the Socrates National Agencies didn't accept the final report of the schools in this project group and consequently cancelled the further financing of the group.
  • as reaction to that the ÖKS Österreichischer Kultur-Service decided to patronise each of the involved schools with the amount of € 600.–, so that these schools res. project-groups keep sticking to the ABC-Network.
  • due to financial insecurities for the schools project-activities have been resting in nearly all schools in autumn / winter 2003
  • the Hungarian school was in Kezmarok and in Krakow (10.—15. Oct.)—it was decided to continue the project with the assistance of the ÖKS.
  • The Italian school has elaborated a new follow-up concept, which will be handed in for the Socrates programme (as TOPICS will not be financed further on): «LABS—Looking at both sides». (One English summery of this concept is attached to this report)

planned activities after the meeting in Vienna:

  • further group-meetings are planned
  • e.g. in March 2004 a group-meeting in Kezmarok (the topic was easter-traditions ?)
  • The concept «LABS», developed by the italien school, is approved by all the partner-schools: the project «LABS» addresses the present and the past situation in order to elaborate positive and negative sides of innovation as well as tradition; the work is based on «oral history», that's why the focus is concentrated on the last 60 years. The target of project is: different generations shall communicate with each other, to look critical at changes (focus of the Italian school: urbanistic changes / nature / infrastructure / handicraft / social behaviour / role of the woman)
  • Since autumn 2004 it is known, that Socrates has accepted the «LABS» concept.
